An Introduction to Hard Wood Floor Cleaning

script>
Hard wood floors are a beautiful choice, offering class and a homely feel to your residence. Coupled with the fact that they are also a very resilient type of flooring and many people consider them an ideal choice for homes and commercial operations.

Despite their resilience there is a certain amount of maintenance work that is required to keep these floors in pristine condition and looking like new. General cleaning can certainly assist in this regard, with periodic sweeping and vacuuming a necessity. Any wet spills should be cleaned immediately as excess water can seep into seams and ruin the wood over time, so any cleaning should be done with an almost dry but moist mop.

There are several factors which can affect the appearance of your floor, and subsequently different courses of action that can be utilized to deal with them. Furniture being dragged, or furniture with metal points on the legs or corners can mark or even dent the floor subsequently removing or rendering useless any sealant that may have previously been applied. High heels can also have this effect and general traffic can wear down the surface over time.

If your floor is starting to appear a little unsightly it is advisable to identify what condition the floor is in before deciding what to do. If the floor has a good seal then an unsightly aspect is probably just the result of a build-up of surface soiling. If this is the case then cleaning and surface buffing would be the recommended course of action. If the above factors have damaged the seal in some way, which is more common than not, then polish stripping, cleaning and re-polishing is normally required.

In some cases the surface is worn down to the point where the wood is effectively unprotected, therefore surface soiling can be ingrained into, and stain, the wood. This is where wood restoration needs to be considered, and in such cases, surface sanding and sealing is the only way to restore the hard wood floor to its original state.
